CANCER TREATMENT CAN ACTUALLY SPREAD CANCER

Chemotherapy, which is accepted worldwide as the treatment of choice for many cancers, has been recently alleged to be actually the reason for the spread of cancer. This shocking discovery was published recently in leading magazines like the Telegraph and Science Translational Medicine. Those who receive chemotherapy drugs have an increased number of so called 'entry points' in their blood vessels that can be used by cancer cells to get into the blood flow and spread throughout the body. A study in mice with breast cancer demonstrated that chemotherapy does shrink the primary tumour but it increases the number of cancer cells in the lungs and circulating body. This information will definitely be of interest to many in the healthcare field, especially to chemo nurses who administer chemotherapy and deal with patients suffering from various cancers.  Such updated information is routinely presented to nurses who undergo the NCLEX Examination which is a licensure examinati...

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Well known is the above mentioned saying and the incident which took place a couple of days ago proves the same true. A five year old boy named Oliver Bevans saved his brother's life who was choking on a meatball that he had swallowed. Interestingly, the two brothers were all by themselves in their grandmothers house when the younger one happened to choke. Oliver Bevans was smart enough to remember and carry out the training that he received at his school in first aid class and hit his brother on the back three times and successfully dislodged the stuck meatball thereby saving his brother's life. Oliver's mother says that he is too young to understand what he has done for his brother. No wonder, knowledge empowered little Oliver to do what was needed at the right time to save his brother's life, an act that cannot be repaid by any means. How important such training and knowledge is! Something as small as three hits at the right place and the right tim...

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT SLEEP?

Modern research suggests that memories that trigger anxiety or stress can be virtually erased without affecting normal memory. It has been understood that long term memories are stored by increasing the length of neural connections in the brain that are called synapses. In order to strengthen different memories, different proteins are used by the body. During the experiment, researchers were able to delete one memory by blocking a specific protein without harming other memories.  It was also noted during a four year old study on mice that sleep actually helps make some neural connections stronger and larger. On the other hand, the weak connections are destroyed in order to make more space for new memories. This strengthening of neural connections helps increase learning but also increases the brains energy consumption and may cause an overload of its information processing capacity. Sleep is necessary to normalise the overall strength of the neural connections in the brain....
