Are you a registered nurse desiring to work in the United States or Canada? If yes, then it is mandatory by law to take the licensure examination to practice your profession in these countries. For both these countries, one examination is sufficient and it is known as NCLEX. You would have probably heard many rumors about this course including this one that it is a very difficult test and one has to be exceptionally brilliant to be able to pass the test. However, the fact is that this exam is designed to test the level of your professional knowledge so as to render a safe practice both for the patient and the practitioner. This being said, it is important to have a thorough knowledge of various topics that are covered during your nursing program. Before you take the test, here are some important and helpful tips that will help you to pass the test and make your dream of working abroad as a nurse come true.
TIP 1: Make a study list of the entire syllabus
The syllabus for this examination covers the entire nursing syllabus and includes nursing fundamentals, medical nursing, surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing and maternity nursing. No wonder, the syllabus is vast and it may have taken you a good 4 years to learn all these topics in your nursing school or college. However, now all you need to do is to go through them and revise what you have learned during your nursing course so as to appear the test.
TIP 2: Make Keynotes
As you study the material of the entire syllabus, remember to make a list of keynotes which form the basis for many of the questions that appear in the exam. This will also help you revise what you have learned days before the exam.
TIP 3: Study well and cover the entire syllabus
Some topics may not be easy to understand and you may have skipped them while studying your nursing course but for the NCLEX exam this would not be a wise course. It is advisable to cover all the topics under each of the section so that you are ready for any question that may be thrown at you during the exam. While you study, try to remember what you read by self-examination.
TIP 4: Think Positive
An ancient proverb says “if you are discouraged during difficult times, your strength will be scanty”. It is vital then to have a positive attitude and to repeatedly tell yourself that will clear the test and there is nothing that will stop you. Always have a positive feeling about the test and about yourself. It will go a long way in preparing for the exam.
TIP 5: On the day before the exam, Rest Well
Experts suggest that last minute studying like the one that students do just the day before an exam is actually detrimental and hurts performance. This is so because it leaves your brain in a puzzled state as you try to process too much information in a short time. Remember, nursing is a skill which you learned over a period of multiple years not merely a few hours! Instead of hurting your memory and your performance, relax and rest well before your exam day so that your mind is fresh and you can appear the test with the highest confidence.
TIP 6: Prepare your mind and body for the exam
Half the battle is won in the mind- therefore it is important to prepare your mind well to be able to take the test and do well in it. Preparing the mind is one-half of the job, the other half is getting your body ready for taking the test. The NCLEX exam can last for up to 6 hours in case you have to take all the 265 questions for which it is important to have good stamina. Ensure that you take good care of your health and eat a well-balanced diet.
TIP 7: Focus on the questions
The test becomes tricky if the questions are difficult to fathom. Therefore, focus properly on the questions and get the sense of what it is asking. There are negative questions that can be confusing at times and these are the ones that most students get wrong. Then there are SATA (select all that apply) questions which require a thorough understanding of the topic and also the question being asked. Hence, concentration is the key factor in scoring well at the NCLEX.
TIP 8: Go Slow
The tale of the hare and the tortoise is a well-known one and it has emphasized for decades the need for being slow and steady. This moral applies particularly to the NCLEX examination where endurance and concentration are of prime importance. So, go slow without rushing through the questions to avoid making silly mistakes and maintain a steady pace to complete the questions well within the stipulated time.
TIP 9: Do Your Best
While it is true that you can take the test more than once, do not let that be the excuse to give your one hindered percent to the first attempt. Think to yourself that this is the only chance you have got and give it your very best shot. Do not let anything hinder you from reaching your full potential be it under preparation or over confidence.
