HOW TO ANSWER MCQ IN LISTENING TEST?

Learn how to improve IELTS Score. The task type which is quite challenging for students in IELTS Listening test is to answer the MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions). In this type of question, there is normally one statement following three answer choices. Sometimes the list of choices may be longer when more than one answers are required. This task type may appear in any section. The questions will be harder if these are in 3rd or 4th sections of the test. Students often choose an incorrect option as they do not listen actively and only hear and match words.

Strategy to Answer:

•  For answering MCQ it is better to read the questions carefully, understand the meaning of questions, underline key words in the question and keep the crux of the question in mind when 30 seconds are given as per the instructions.

•  If there is need to choose more than 1 answer, underline the number of choices required.

•  While the recording is played, more attention should be on listening to the intention, emotion, and expressions. Although keywords are important this is rephrased sometimes, so think of synonyms of the words also.

•  Cross(x)  the option which is totally irrelevant according to the conversation.

•  Pay attention to words such as mainly, most, but, however, finally etc.  or the words emphasized by the speaker.

•  Mark the answer on the basis of conversation but keep listening till the speaker talks about the topic.

In this kind of chart students should use sequential connectors.  Some commonly used sequential connectors are: First, Next, Then, After t...
