Important tips to describe where things are in maps and where changes have occurred

While describing a map of writing task 1 which is for academic students, students have to describe the changes where directions are an integral part of the task. Most students find it easy to use words like ‘to the left’ and ‘to the right ‘for describing directions but a better way is to use ‘north’, ‘south’, ‘east’ and ‘west’. Students can draw the symbols on the question paper if they are not already there.

Examples:
·        The forest to the south of the river was cut down.
·        A golf course was constructed to the north of the airport.
·        The houses in the south-west of the town were demolished.
·        The green fields to the north-west of the city were redeveloped as a park.
·        The airport in the centre of the city was relocated to the north-east of the river.
·        The school to the south-east was knocked down and a new one built to the east of the forest.

In this task type, the steps are shown through visual information.   The process may be natural or man-made.     Here are some tips to interpret this task type correctly to get high band score.   •The initial thing to decide about a process diagram is the tense usage: if the chart includes a natural process, use present indefinite tense but if it is a man-made process, then, write it in present passive tense as in a man-made process the emphasize is on steps not on the person conducting the process. •The second thing to decide is the use of connectors to make the task coherent. In this kind of chart students should use sequential connectors.  Some commonly used sequential connectors are: First, Next, Then, After t...
