Many students have a desire to pursue their further
study abroad so that they can avail the best career opportunities, but when
they apply for an international university program, they have to demonstrate
their English language proficiency by appearing in English language test. IELTS
is one of the most widely accepted language tests by international schools,
universities, companies, immigration authorities and professional
organizations. The performance of the students is assessed in fair and unbiased
manners regardless of nationality, background, gender, lifestyle or location.
What is IELTS?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international standardized test of English
that assesses the competence of non-native
English language speakers. There are two versions of IELTS test: Academic,
for those who want to go abroad for their study and professional registration
and Genera
Training -for those who want to work and settle in
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK. A nine-band scale is used to
determine the level of the person in four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing
and speaking. The LRW are conducted on same day consecutively while speaking
test may appear 7 days before or after the main test.
Listening:
the test contains 40 questions that students need to answer by listening to an
audio script. The listening normally lasts for 30 minutes. 10 minutes extra are
given to students for transferring their answers on an answer sheet.
Reading:
The test has around 40 questions of various types and students are required to
answer these questions on the basis of passages or sections given. The total
time for the module is 60 minutes. There is no extra time for transferring
answers.
Writing:
the writing module contains two tasks Task 1 and Task 2. The time given to write
both the tasks is 60 minutes. Task 1 is the interpretation of an illustration
in case of academic test while in general training task 1 is a letter. Task 2
is a topic based essay.
Speaking:
It is a one to one interview
minutes with the examiner which lasts for 11-15. The speaking is divided into
three parts: general questions, cue-card and follow-up questions.
The result of the IELTS
is declared after 13 days. IELTS is accepted by thousands of organizations over
135 countries. Most institutions require the students to score around 6 or 7 bands
for the admission in courses. Every year 48 IELTS tests are conducted. The
authorities which jointly organize and manage the IELTS are British Council,
IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment. The score of
the test are valid for 2 years. There is no any restriction on retaking of test
which means students can appear as many time as they wish to achieve their
desired scores.
