How to answer True/ False/ Not Given in IELTS Reading

While attempting the reading Module in IELTS, many students encounter main problems in answering question type TRUE/ FALSE/ NOT GIVEN. This blog would help you improve your accuracy and score by following some strategies.

What is True/False/ Not Given question type.

This task type contains factual statements and students are required to analyze whether a statement is true, false or not given on the basis of information in reading passage which means if the question and the information in passage convey similar meaning it is true, if the information is contradicting and opposite to information in the passage then, it is false and if partial information is correct but you are unable to find the rest in passage or there is no information then it is not given.

Tips to score 7+ band
  • The initial step to answer this question type is to read the instructions carefully to decide the answer form i.e. if it is a TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN or YES/NO/NOT GIVEN question.
  • Read the statement carefully, mark keywords and generate the synonyms of keywords in mind.
  • Look carefully if any qualifying word is given in the statement for example few, some, all, most, often, always, only etc. Read the statement carefully when qualifying word is in statement as these words change the meaning of the whole sentence.
  • Locate the keywords in passage and read carefully to derive the meaning and not only words.
  • Compare the information and answer the question
  • It is worth remembering that the information for this task type is in sequence in the passage. This means that the answer to the first question would first in the passage, followed by the second and so on. If you do not get any information for third between the information for second and fourth answer, there are chances that the answer is not given.
  • In the given statements there is at least answer from each which means if you have written all answers as either true or false without using not given option then at least your one answer is incorrect.

Interpreting Process Diagram   In IELTS , process diagram is a less common but still very important task type as students are required to use specific language to interpret the relevant information. In this task type, the steps are shown through visual information.   The process may be natural or man-made.     Here are some tips to interpret this task type correctly to get high band score.   •The initial thing to decide about a process diagram is the tense usage: if the chart includes a natural process, use present indefinite tense but if it is a man-made process, then, write it in present passive tense as in a man-made process the emphasize is on steps not on the person conducting the process. •The second thing to decide is the use of connectors to make the task coherent. In this kind of chart students should use sequential connectors.  Some commonly used sequential connectors are: First, Next, Then, After t...
