Interpreting Process Diagram

In IELTS, process diagram is a less common but still very important task type as students are required to use specific language to interpret the relevant information. In this task type, the steps are shown through visual information.  The process may be natural or man-made.

Here are some tips to interpret this task type correctly to get high band score.

•The initial thing to decide about a process diagram is the tense usage: if the chart includes a natural process, use present indefinite tense but if it is a man-made process, then, write it in present passive tense as in a man-made process the emphasize is on steps not on the person conducting the process.
•The second thing to decide is the use of connectors to make the task coherent. In this kind of chart students should use sequential connectors.
Some commonly used sequential connectors are:
First,
Next,
Then,
After that,
Following this,
Later,
Finally,
•After that, there is need to think of different verbs to describe the stages mentioned in the diagram. Students should use a wide range of correct vocabulary words to avoid repetition.
•Students should ensure that the steps are organized logically to make sense.
•Finally, write a concise summary of all steps as an overall analysis. An important feature of the chart can also be written with summary.
